Biography

George Terry McDonald makes images of the more intense realms of human activity. As a child, sports, crime, war, history and politics commanded his aesthetic attention. Still fascinated by these and the more fringe elements of pop culture, his work ties them into investigations of identity.

McDonald's mark-making style was nurtured during his years on the Lower East Side where he was part of the Neo-Expressionist underground. While working in the Whitney Museum and as a teacher in Harlem, his paintings began to weave individual experience into collective historical continuum.

His work employs figurative representation and dramatic irony. He creates theater on canvas where High and Low culture enjoy equal billing with truth and fiction, news and entertainment, history and poetry. Whether making visual objects, animated videos, writing and recording songs, performing on a variety of stages, McDonald revels in the opportunity to play a game that never ends.

McDonald received his MFA in painting from USC, and his BA in English from UNC Chapel Hill. He has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and North Carolina. Most recently, he had a solo show at The Ramp Gallery in Asheville.
